Peter sat in a corner of his room. On the floor, against the wall, knees drawn to his chest. Nathan and Sylar weren't back yet. It had been a half hour. He had refused to see anybody else; he was just waiting for Nathan to come back. Nathan would make things okay.

He'd forgotten that he was supposed to be mad at his big brother over the horse thing.

Claire was on the other side of the room, right near the door, also on the floor, knees pulled up to her chest. She'd tried to talk to Peter, but he wasn't having it, not right now, and she didn't know what else to do.

"Go," he said, not for the first time. "Somebody needs to warn them what happened. They're worried. Shepherd's worried." And then he shut up again.

She just shook her head. "I'm not leaving you," she murmured, moving to get up and come closer. Something else that she'd tried to do more than once.

"Don't," he said. "Don't touch me."

Claire checked a sigh and went back to her position against the wall, pulling her legs up again, wanting badly to just be able to go curl up with Peter. "Peter, you couldn't do anything. You know you couldn't. She was gone before we got there. It's not your fault."

"They're out there. By the infirmary. They're arguing. I can hear them in my head. Always in my head. Everything's there, and it won't leave. Won't go away. Won't leave me alone." He tangled his fingers in his own hair and squeezed his eyes shut. "Can't make it stop. I hear everything and I feel everything and I don't want it. I don't want it anymore. Make it stop."

"I can't... I can't, Peter, I wish I could," Claire closed her own eyes for a moment, trying to stem the tears she could feel pricking just behind her eyelids. "I'd do anything if I could make it stop."

"I won't take that medicine anymore. I won't. I'll run away and I'll hide and no one will find me, ever." He knew Nathan was mad about that; that he'd been so sick and they went to Triumph to get the medicine for Peter, and that boy had come on board, and Nathan had been humiliated and they'd almost been taken by slavers and it was Peter's fault. Once, in his head, Nathan had blamed Mohinder for what had happened because Mohinder wouldn't let Nathan fuck him. Nathan liked to blame Mohinder for things. But Peter knew better. "It's always my fault. I try so hard. I try. But I can't do anything."

"Don't--Peter, don't say that, please," Claire's head snapped up, a hint of panic in her expression. "Don't leave, please. You can't leave. We'll find a way, we will, but don't say that. Don't leave me here." She felt selfish the second she said it, but she couldn't help meaning it.

"I wanted to save her. Why couldn't I save her?" Mothers were dangerous things to have, he decided. They abandon you when you need them. The back of his head hit the wall with a loud thump. It should have hurt. It did hurt. Rather a lot. But what did it matter?

He looked up at the ceiling a moment. Then he said: "Mohinder's back. He has secrets."
