And, yes, [livejournal.com profile] sara_elf, it was a tad on the painful side. I will have to take it easy for the rest of the night, my brain may not be able to cope with the thinking. Ow.

Anyway, yes, I had a thought. After reading about the wank on the Sirius/Remus ML, about how it's pretentious and immature to end a story with "the end" or any such thing, my brain said something to me.

My brain said: "I hope whoever this person is, has not seen Return of the King."

Because, really. The end. The end says, The End.

If it's pretentious for a writer to say "The End" so as not to make people think there's more to the story, what does that make Peter Jackson?

Something to ponder as I respond to comments to my rantage of the other night.

Umm....the end means it's over. And if it's pretentious to end with "the end" how pretentious is it to end with "finish" or "finis" or even "fin"?

*boggles*

Well, thinking about it, it probably is a bit on the pretentious side to end with "fin" or "finis" *g* But, yeah, my mind DOES boggle at this person saying that THE END is pretentious! Sheesh.

Well, I end with 'fin' because I can't be bothered to write 'finish' and I like 'finis'. It sounds, well, pretentious. *g*

Oh, yes, I most certainly do agree that's what he means *g* What I'm saying is that if somebody can't cope with "The End" being tacked at the end of a story, how would they react to it at the end of a big movie like that? *G*

No, it's not pretentious. It's customary; yes, even perhaps a tad cliche.

And I agree that ending with French words (particularly in an American or English-speaking movie not about France) is even more pretentious.

Perhaps this said person does not know the meaning of the word?

Yeah -- I do think that "fin" or "finis" are pretty pretentious *g* But I simply don't care if somebody wants to let me know that they're ending their story where it ends. Actually, I think I'd prefer to know that it is indeed the end and that I don't have to go hunting for more, you know?
