Oh fuckity.
Apr. 8th, 2007 12:31 pmFirefox is being super-weird. Doing things like re-warning me about encrypted sites, and it won't go to full-screen when I start it up. A whole bunch of settings had been re-set.
When I started it up this morning, it gave me a couple screens saying that various extensions were ready to update.
And now I've noticed a massive fuckload of my bookmarks are missing. Stuff I'd bookmarked to look at later. As if I could even ever remember what any of them were. What's strange is that they were all bookmarks that were definitely there last night, and none of them were in a neat little folder. They were all just there. Rather a distressing lot of them, underneath all my neat little folders.
Bastard technology! *shakes fist*
What the HELL, though. What the hell. How did that even HAPPEN? D:
ETA: OK, so Firefox is still being a wanker with demanding to open on just the one half of my monitor (which, just to illustrate how eye-rollingly annoying that is, is a widescreen monitor, so, yeah, that's annoying), BUT! I have just discovered something that is super-helpful: it would appear that Firefox makes backups of your bookmarks. Just simple HTML files.
Wanna know how to find them, in case of similar WTFery?
What you'll need to do is head on over to "My Computer", and under the Tools menu, select "Folder Options". Under the "View" tab, select "Show Hidden Files and Folders".
Now, this is going to all depend on just how you've got your computer set up. This is the path I needed to take; yours will vary depending on your Windows XP login options.
C:\ --> Documents and Settings --> (my computer login identity) --> Application Data --> Mozilla --> Firefox --> Profiles --> (there should be a folder here; [a bunch of letters and numbers].default) --> bookmarkbackups --> and then an HTML file with your bookmarks. So you just select the one with the most recent date, and there they are.
And then from there, you can go back to Firefox, go to the Bookmarks menu, select manage bookmarks, and import the html file.
Still. Has this ever happened to anyone else? I don't understand the wonkyness.
