This is my obligatory Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince post. I feel stupid for saying this, because I just shouldn't fucking have to, but behind the cut? Spoilers, people.
I stayed up to finish reading this and have to get these thoughts down.
I. Ron/Hermione
*smug look*
I wonder how many Harry/Hermione fans have burned their books? Ahh, I love the smell of "I've always been right".
II. Harry/Ginny
Please see point I.
III. The Titular Half-Blood Prince
Guessed this one, too. Knew it was Snape. Just not sure why.
IV. Snape.
I'm torn between omgwtfbbq Snape you motherfuckingsonofawhore and hmm, was Dumbledore, in fact, telling Snape to kill him? I guess we'll find out in a few years with the release of blook seven, huh?
There's a lot more depth here, which is interesting. So much more about him. Ahhh...
V. Dumbledore
Well... yeah, I was prepared for this. I mean, he's the Obi-Wan to Harry's Luke, right? He has to die before the final battle. Still... Christ, see, I don't want him to be wrong about point IV, which is why there's a part of me thinking he was, in fact, pleading with Snape to kill him. Or doing it telepathically. Or something. I just couldn't bear him being wrong about Snape.
VI. Bill/Fleur
Interesting development there with Bill; I'm still deeply annoyed by the way that Rowling writes out the bloody accents. Isn't this right out of fanfic? *G*
VII. Remus/Tonks
*heavy, heavy sigh* I was braced for this, but I still don't like it. I guess it's just... there were hints before, weren't there, about Bill/Fleur, but nothing about Remus/Tonks. Also, yes, I admit the selfish slasher in me wanted Remus to actually be gay, but this doesn't at all disprove Remus/Sirius so I can be happy.
However...
VIII. Remus/Severus
... Bugger. It's all AU, ain't it?
However...!
IX. Lucius/Severus
*chortle* TOTALLY CANON SO THERE.
X. R.A.B.
Regulus Black, anyone? *grin*
XI. Draco
Iiiiiinteresting. So he finally does something not quite 2-D, but he's still a little bitch. Still can't stand him. However, Harry/Draco shippers must be vaguely happy, what with the 'obsessed with Draco'-ness.
In fact, Harry/Draco is so totally much more evidenced in canon than Harry/Hermione. *snigger*
XII. One last thought...
Snape, my boy, please, please, let this be more than the simple fact that you're a triple-bloody-agent. There has to be more to this.
And one more final non-spoilery thought:
Someone, please, explain to me again how these are actually books for children? Some of the dialogue -- one particular word used in this book? Totally not small-child appropriate. One doesn't throw about a word like "slut*" in a book targetted to kids. I've always read, over and over again, that Rowling did not set out with the intention of making these books for kids -- young adult, perhaps, but not kids. These are not kids books. If I had small children, I would totally not allow them to read these books, any more than I'd really allow them to see a movie rated PG-13. (Though I would, however, probably let them read a book a year starting from about age twelve or so...)
*If you think this is a spoiler? You need to chillax. Or unfriend me, whichever you prefer.

Date: 2005-07-23 12:54 am (UTC)The way I understood it, though I certainly have to read the book again, is that Dumbledore was dying anyway. I don't believe, exactly, that things turned out precisely as they would have planned. Dumbledore didn't want to die, but knew he was going to, so the way I see it, he and Snape had a Moment there, and he told Snape to do the deed to (1) put him out of his misery; (2) protect Draco & Harry; (3) fulfill his Unbreakable Vow.
I could most definitely be wrong. But the way I see it all, it does make sense. All that remains now is for Rowling to shed light on the situation with Book Seven.
