I wondered while I was watching last night if being a fan of the play made watching the movie that much more painful. Even if I hadn't ever seen the play, I would still have tremendous issues with the acting and the directing, but I might not have hated it to the extent that I did.
About your second point, Michael Crawford's voice is what I think of first when I hear Phantom, though I don't balk at hearing other people sing the part, and Colm Wilkinson can sing to me any day of the week.
Sarah Brightman, on the other hand, let's just say that when the sis and I went to see Aspects of Love in London and we got to the theatre and there was an announcement saying that Sarah Brightman would not be singing the lead that night, we cheered.
