Yeah -- so we all know my job woes. I feel like I've been kicked in the gut:

One of the very worst employees our store ever had is working at Blockbuster. Blockbuster, who didn't even call me for an interview. When I worked for a video store for six years; two spent being a cashier monkey, two spent being a supervisor, two spent running the place. They didn't want me. They hired this guy.

I don't know whether to laugh or cry.

Oh, man. *hugs* I don't know if this'll make you feel any better, but my guess is you had too much experience, therefore making you too valuable and too out of the realm of what they wanted to pay anyone. >_< Still, that sucks so very, very much. Christ.

Several people have suggested to me that the amount of experience I had scared off both Blockbuster and Rogers Video (do you have Rogers cablesystems out there? Or is it Shaw? I always get confused). That they would, essentially, not be able to pull the wool over my eyes about anything, etc. But, I mean, I wasn't even applying for management, just as a CSR, which makes it all the more frustrating. At any rate, my mum thinks that's stupid and not at all why neither store would contact me. Argh, at any rate.

It's not that they wouldn't be able to fool you. Employers are reluctant to hire people with too much experience because they figure you'll know you're underemployed, will keep looking for a better gig, and will leave them as soon as you find one. If you'd been applying for an assistant manager position you'd have been more likely to get it. *hugs you tight* It's a tough spot to be in, sweetie, but hang in there. *hugs more*

She's right. No consolation to you I know and frustrating as hell but... What about applying for assistant manager/supervisor jobs at other sorts of outlets or retail stores, most of the skills you have should be transferable to other products? Is it worth enquiring if your local library needs a specialist ie you to run/manage their video section? A long shot I know but it's worth a few stamps just to write to people and ask if they need staff, even if they're not advertising. Same for local cinema maybe? (Or whereever else you fancy working) Just write and ask if they've got any vacancies coming up?

As far as applying for management positions, I balk at that because:
(1) Unless I'm being paid $9/hr and given benefits, I will be leaving when/if the instant Starbucks calls me. That's really where I want to work, and I am keeping myself optimistic that since the assistant manager and the manager both liked me, and called me to say so, and that they're keeping all my info on file since they have such a high turn around rate... yeah.
(2) We had some really horrible experiences at my store with hiring people fresh off the street for management positions. I never, ever want to be in that position myself; not knowing the staff, not knowing how the store operates, not knowing the customers, and trying to run the place? Not on anybody's life.

And, sadly, as a plus-sized woman, my retail choices are very limited. So much of retail is women's clothing, and women's clothing stores won't hire plus-sized women, also a lot of other places won't even look at you twice if you are. Fuckers. Discrimination.
