Wouldn't have taken me so long if I hadn't been trying to chat and also getting repeated phone calls from work.
Yesterday, I went out looking for HP vids, as, I have said before, I've found few that are very good. I went over to fanflix.com because they post HP & LotR vids. I saw some of the newest ones, by a vidder named Moviest@r, and downloaded two, called "Memento Mori" & "Tempora Mutantor". I noticed something about "Memento Mori" -- it uses the beginning shot of my HP vid, Book of Days. Hmm, I said. Did research, watched a bunch of her HP/LotR vids, realised, Fuck. Naturally, I was livid, but my dearestcruisedirector showed up, and became my voice of reason, and thus, I sent a very, very reasonable e-mail:

First, the very first shot, of the first years approaching Hogwarts in the boats, and the fade-in to the close up. "Gee," I thought, "that's not in the movie. I wonder why that's so familiar. Oh, that's right. I edited that for the beginning of my vid, "Book of Days". As I kept watching Momento Mori, I noticed many more clips from "Book of Days", and "Devil Song" and also a few fairly large chunks out of my Lord of the Rings vid, "Tempus Vernum." Watching "Tempora Mutantor", I also noticed sections of the vid that were taken from "Book of Days".
I was at this point, rather upset that somebody would use my edits without asking for permission first. So for a lark, I checked out the meet 'n greet on the forums at fanflix and saw that you had, indeed, left a little profile. Checked out your page through your LJ.
I have been largely unimpressed by the large chunks copied exactly from "Legacy" in your vid "Ameno". Likewise the chunks of "Colourblind", "Drive", possibly "Striptease" and however many others for "Bring Me To Life", and the chunks of "Legacy" and "Primal Eyes" in "Fame", as well as a section of Al Johnson's "Where Do We Go From Here" vid at the beginning of "Fame".
I understand that source capture hardware & software is expensive. I understand that you've obviously had to get your source anywhere you could. But it is so, so not cool to filch edits from other fans. These vids take up *hours* of my time, and it is out of the goodness of my heart that I have made them available to people like you to download. The webspace, the hardware, the software -- all of it is very expensive. The powers that be willing, I am going to edit professionally one day, and so I do spend HOURS doing these vids, and to have somebody pass off my editing as her own is hurtful. I am not claiming to be Peter Jackson or Chris Columbus, or any of the crew members who help them edit their film. I am not claiming that the original source is mine. This is why at the bottom of every page but the index.html page, I state that LotR belongs to Tolkien & New Line, HP belongs to Rowling & the WB and that The Prophecy belongs to Dimension Films. Likewise, no vidder should claim that any other vidder's work is theirs. This is common respect and courtesy. In fact, on http://vids.last-dance.com/rhythm.html I have stated:
Please do not redistribute these vids without my permission. Point people to the various pages found here, if you want. Do not direct-link to the videos, but do feel free to link to the various pages. Do not try to pretend that these videos are yours. Netiquette and fandom respect here, people. Wouldn't you be angry and hurt if I cut together and rearranged three of your vids, set them to music, and said "Here! This is mine!"? Same thing applies to me, doesn't it?
So this is what I'm asking -- state in big, bright bold letters across the top of your vids page, that many of your Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter vids have "borrowed" clips from my work, and point people back to http://vids.last-dance.com. I see that you update your LJ at least once a week, you were posting on the little bullet board yesterday, so I think it is perfectly reasonable that credit should be up by next Sunday, the 26th. I'm being very reasonable. Other vidders would have had your name smeared all over LiveJournal and any other forum they could. They'd have all their friends sending you nasty e-mails and leaving rude comments in your journal, until you have to block them. I won't do this to you -- if you give me credit -- but I *do* want you to know that I am giving Al Johnson a head's up that he has had clips stolen as well, and that if you don't give me credit, I won't continue to be reasonable. You're young, you've just used what I can only hope is very bad judgement. I'm giving you a much bigger
chance than I'm pretty sure most other vidders would. Fans do not take kindly to fans stealing their vids/art/icons/stories. I'm way more laid back than the rest.

A young vidder (she's only 16) named Desiree / Moviest@r ripped off two of my Harry Potter vids. This, obviously, pissed the hell out of me. I did some digging, found her site, and discovered that, wow, she'd ripped off a large chunk of my Lord of the Rings repertoire as well. Her vids page is here: http://www.wizardblood.com/risen/. One vid, called "Fame" has ripped off your "Where Do We Go From Here" vid, as well. I recognised the beginning of the vid INSTANTLY.
I will not flame her yet -- I will copy & paste the long e-mail I sent her, just so you know what I had to say. I'm not sure if she used any other sections of "WDWGFH" in her vids or not. It's just that the beginning of that is SO memorable (cuz, you've got some SERIOUS talent going on there, man. Do you do this professionally? If not, WHY!?). So... yeah. I just

Thank you for the kind words and the heads up. I downloaded that "Fame" vid and found that she has borrowed some of my favorite edits from my LOTR video, too much to be ignored. The funny thing is this girl has e-mailed me before and she seemed really sweet. She asked my advice on some things but I didn't know she was borrowing my edits. I'm a little angry about it but I don't know how to go about asking her to take those edits out of her video without being mean. She is young** and I don't want to hurt her feelings if she didn't mean any harm. I just hope she takes the advice of your e-mail and not do this kind of thing again. The e-mail you sent to her was very reasonable and nicely worded...much more level-headed than anything I would have written if I found out what she was doing lol. If a few days have passed and she hasn't responded to you I'll send her an e-mail of my own.

Because I do not use - really not - any scenes from edited music videos.
And I don't know your Harry Potter vid "Book of Days", which you have said was including scenes that I used. I know "Legacy" and it has really inspired me for my vids. But I used my own shots. I just did it a bit similiar to your vid. If that is a problem I am sorry. I thought that it was okay. Really.
And about AJ Johnson, I am a friend of his and I love his vids. That's RIGHT. I have some edits of his vids in my videos. If he wants credit for them, which I don't think so, but if he wants some I will give him credit.
About stealing edits without permission and so on I know that all. I have made many vids and I have seen many other videos which used my edits. But anyway, I think it's not that cruel. Though I was upset about them, I didn't talked to them about it. Some of them are even my friends by now. Maybe you know Janine? She cannot download all these movies on her computer, so I help her out now with edits and her flicks are always great!
Anyway, what I wanted to say is that I am sorry about the confusion my vids maybe caused. I took some (not many!) edits from AJ, because I think they are brilliant, but I do have my own copy of Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings and so on, so I do not need to steal stuff without permission. I hope this is enough of an explanation, if not feel free to email me again, but it would be awful if we'd fight just because of that. I think flickers should get along well. Oh boy. She has to go and LIE to me. LIE LIE LIE. *throws juvenile temper-tantrum* So, after I calmed down, I picked five of vids and did shot-by-shot comparisons to mine. Here they are, in order they appear on her site.
For all of her vids, please pay careful attention to the fact that her sources change constantly, notice the brightness of the black matte around my clips, notice how her clips about 95% of the time do not match the music/lyrics. For my LotR vids, notice the extreme brightness of my clips! Notice the dates stamped on her vids in the info, and the dates mine were created marked right on my site, and again in the vid info.
Addendum: 10/20/03. I have taken virtually all of my vids offline. All the Harry Potter vids are still up, and now watermarked, (and two NEW watermarked LotR vids), and Primal Eyes is still available. Everything else, well, it had to be done.

The use of Legacy hurts, as, it was my VERY FIRST vid (though re-edited at the beginning of this year when I got my new software), and she used all but about 30 seconds of it, and it's NOT a long vid.

(A) 0:57 -> 1:48 = (L) 0:24 -> 1:15

The ending clip of Frodo & Sam is definitely taken from one of my vids, look at brightness of the source. Though this isn't so grievous, as I didn't edit it the way I did the rest of the frelling vid.

My notes for this one are different than the others, as this is the first one I actually did this for, so hopefully I can make this make sense.
The opening of (B) = the opening of (C), down to the glitch at (C) 0:18 (is 0:21 for (B)) -- this lasts until 0:56 for both vids.
(B) 1:02 -> 1:16 = (D) from 0:55 -> 0:59, then 1:01 -> 1:12
(B) 1:20 -> 1:30 = (D) 00 -> 0:10ish
(B) 1:29 -> 2:16 = (C) 1:13 -> 2:01
(B) 2:32 -> 2:42 = (C) 2:40 -> 2:51
(B) 2:44 seems to be from "Striptease" (which is here, but it's nothing I really made any changes to)
(B) clips at 2:58 are probably from (D) at around 1:12, though are edited slightly
(B) 3:24 -> 3:31 = (C) 3:08 -> 3:16

Fame (F) & Primal Eyes (P) -- please right-click & save Primal Eyes to your HD if you're going to watch it. Had taken it offline to wait for re-editing.

Legacy is ripped off at 1:19, I think, and possibly others, and the opening is DEFINITELY from "Where Do We Go From Here", which, again, Al said Desiree did NOT have permission to use.
