I think she was talking about being a show off in class. I certainly found that obnoxious in high school and also censured myself. Instead of answering right away, I would wait a moment to see if another colleague was raising their hands, but if not I would do it. I think not only your colleagues, but also the teachers dislike an "insufferable know-it-all", be it boy or girl.

You know, she probably was... still kind of rubbed me the wrong way then and burns a touch now, though. But maybe it's 'cause I resembled that remark a little too much.

I had to come back and check the context of the comment! :) But I have replied to months-and-months old comments before myself, so... good for you!

I didn't take it badly, because I sort of recognize myself in her comment and going through the same realization she went through. Not saying it's good, but then things were different 15/20 years ago and I was reading way too much Bronte at the time (be quiet and meek kind of thing).
