Orchids? Anybody?

Well hi!

First, thank you to those who posted birthday wishes. :) *hugs*

Second, I received a beautiful, white, potted orchid from [livejournal.com profile] deerdancer today. I also got a $50 gift card from my parents for Chapters; I fully intended to go and buy an orchid book so I'd know how to care for the poor plant. My parents are like, no, no, don't waste your card! Just look it up on the internet!

And I tried googling "orchid care" and came up with so much, and I can't make sense of it, and HELP. Does ANYBODY here keep orchids? What's a good, reliable site? I NEED HELP OMG.

I do have orchids. <3 What kind do you have?

And I'm awful with birthday, I'm so sorry. Happy Birthday!

Um. White ones? There's four blooms. And a sprout.

You can click on the picture for a big one:

And thank you for the birthday wishes. :)

Oh, yes, that's the kind I have!

They like it light, but no direct sunlight. I water them about once a week, always into the pot and making sure that the water does not stand in it. The lovely blossoms will fall off after a while. Just leave it the way it is until the stem is dried out, then cut it, but leave a small bit. I always cut it down to 2 cm. It will get a new stem once it is willing to bloom again. :) Mine blooms once a year. There is special orchid fertilizer, but I only bother with it about twice a year.
If it gets too many aerial roots you need to water it more. :)

That's it, I think!

Your orchid is very lovely!

Hmmmm.

OK, so, first: my bedroom faces east, but, sadly, I am generally a fairly late riser. However, I have absolutely no problem with always opening my curtains and blinds. If I leave them slightly out of way of the window, will that be enough light? Once it starts getting later on in the day, I usually also have a halogen lamp that I leave on.

About how much water should she get? (Yes, my orchid is a girl. Hush.) And what do you mean by "making sure that the water does not stand in it"?

My windows are facing north and my orchids are fine. I really believe she will do great. :)

Uh, sometimes I'm not good at explaining things in English for the first time. My orchids come in a plastic pot which goes into a ceramic one. Does that make sense? When I water them, I make sure there is no water in the ceramic one, so their roots won't rot.

I hope this helps!

*clears throat*
Happy Birthday to you!
Happy Birthday to you!
Happy Birthday, dear ashinae!
Happy Birthday to you!
*blushes*
:D
I have one orchid and it stands halfway between door and windows so that it has light but will stand in the glaring sun. I dunk it for half an hour every Saturday morning and bought a fertilizer to use it the way it says.
That is all I know and it has helped me for the past three years.

Thank you! You always make me smile. :)

And thanks for the advice; I'm gathering up tidbits here and there now, and hopefully I'll be able to not kill the pretty flower.

So I totally didn't know it was your birthday (sorry!) but there should be something in your inbox from me, anyhow. :D And now... I sing the Viking Birthday Song:

Happy Birthday! *THUD* Happy Birthday! *THUD*
May the candles on your cake
burn like cities in your wake

Happy Birthday! *THUD* Happy Birthday! *THUD*
Death and gloom and black despair
People dying everywhere

Happy Birthday! *THUD* Happy Birthday! *THUD*
Now you are the age you are
Your demise cannot be far

Happy Birthday! *THUD* Happy Birthday! *THUD*
Now your jail-bait days are done
let's go out and have some fun!

Happy Birthday! *THUD* Happy Birthday! *THUD*
Burn the Castle and storm the keep
Kill the Women but SAVE THE SHEEP!

Happy Birthday! *THUD* Happy Birthday! *THUD*
It's your birthday never fear
You'll be dead this time next year

Happy Birthday! *THUD* Happy Birthday! *THUD*
See the wrinkles on your face
Like the pattern of fine lace

Happy Birthday! *THUD* Happy Birthday! *THUD*
Birthdays come but once a year
Marking time as Death draws near

Happy Birthday! *THUD* Happy Birthday! *THUD*
When you’ve reached this age you know
That the mind is first to go

Happy Birthday! *THUD* Happy Birthday! *THUD*
This one lesson you must learn:
First you pillage, THEN you burn

Happy Birthday! *THUD* Happy Birthday! *THUD*
Just be glad the friends you’ve got
Haven’t found out you-know-what

Happy Birthday! *THUD* Happy Birthday! *THUD*

Nice flower - I believe [livejournal.com profile] sara_elf's mother raises orchids? Maybe e-mail Sara San... though that's not the right honorific for a woman is it? >_

[identity profile] ashinae.livejournal.com 2007-03-29 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Sara's mum does indeed raise orchids. I've left her a message to please please please call meeeeeeeeeeeee.

And, for women I think it's "chan", but, really, I've NO clue.

[identity profile] sara-elf.livejournal.com 2007-04-02 02:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Chan is only for close friends and family, san is for everyone else. Men and women, doesn't matter. :)

Konban wa!

[identity profile] ashinae.livejournal.com 2007-04-02 03:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Aha! So I can call you Sara-chan, cuz, like, I'm family. Right? *G*
