Loyalty

Snape hovered in the doorway. Lupin could see his reflection in the window. "Severus," he acknowledged, softly.

"Lupin."

There was silence between them. Somewhere in the distance, Lupin watched a crash of lightning. It was far enough away that the accompanying thunder was a quiet rumble.

He didn't turn around. He wasn't ready to actually look the other man in the eyes. The silence stretched on, then eventually Snape spoke.

"I heard about--"

Lupin shook his head. "Don't." Slowly, he turned, shoved his hands deep into his pockets, and stared at Snape. "So you came back."

"I never left."
