Crazy Little Thing
A Severus Snape/Remus Lupin Fairytale

Once upon a time there was a young wizard named Severus Snape.

He was a shy boy, a quiet boy, a smart and studious boy. He liked potions and he liked keeping to himself and he liked the colour black and he liked other boys' bums but shh, that's a secret.

One day young Severus met another boy at school. The boy's name was Remus Lupin. Severus noticed that Remus was also shy, and quiet, and smart. He wondered if Remus also liked other boys' bums, but kept that pondering hidden deep in the recesses of his mind because, shh.

But Remus had three other friends already, and they weren't very nice to Severus (truth be told, they were downright rotten and nasty and mean), and never once did Remus tell them to stop (no, Lily Evans told them to stop, and Lily was nice, and Lily was pretty, but Lily, unfortunately, had breasts, and Severus wasn't very fond of breasts). Remus didn't tell his friends to stop, and it broke Severus' heart.

Remus went missing every month. This made Severus curious. Through a series of very unfortunate events (Sirius Black was a right bastard, he was, truth be told), Severus discovered that Remus was a werewolf. This should have made Severus' crush on pretty young Remus go away, and if anybody had asked, Severus would have said oh, no, naturally not -- he had no fond feelings for Remus Lupin. In fact, the slightest thought hadn't even passed through his mind to notice that Remus had bright, pretty eyes, or a lovely smile, or nice long fingers that had a certain way of wrapping around a quill like it was a precious object and -- no, no, he had never noticed such things. Ever.

But, deep in the quiet recesses of his mind, Severus knew -- oh, yes, he knew -- that he still had a crush on Remus, no matter what he would tell himself or anyone else.

The years passed, as the years do. Many terrible, tragic, things happened (but this is another tale entirely). Eventually, Severus and Remus were reunited at their old school, but now they were both teachers, and Severus wanted Remus' job, but Dumbledore would just never give that job to Severus, and it wasn't fair, it wasn't fair at all.

Though they were both older now, and Remus was showing signs of grief and strain and bore the scars of his condition, he still had pretty eyes, and a lovely smile, and impossibly long fingers that would probably -- well, he was still pretty Remus. But Severus was strong, and he resisted (the fact that Remus' ex-boyfriend escaped from prison might have had something to do with this -- damn that Sirius Black!). Eventually, Remus and Sirius got back together.

Severus would say that this didn't bother him in the slightest, as he had never had the slightest inclination towards having any interest in Remus. Ever.

Eventually Severus realised he was full of shit.

As it does, tragedy reared its ugly head, and Sirius Black was killed. Severus was never as cold nor heartless as anyone might like to believe, and he had never wished that such a thing might happen to him (he never really wished anything worse than for all of Black's hair to fall out or something, or maybe for him to be plagued by locusts). But Remus grieved, when he wasn't putting up a brave face for that impossible brat Harry Potter, because Remus had loved Sirius Black.

Remus should have known that there was the chance that he would lose Sirius for good, what with the war raging on around them. Severus would say this to anyone; that while it was terribly sad that Remus was alone, he still knew that this outcome was possible.

Had anyone asked, he would have denied that he and Remus had anything in common -- that they were two men scarred by life, haunted by the past, and burned terribly by a crazy little thing called love. In fact, this would be reason enough for him to resist trying to help Remus in any way.

Upon seeing the way Remus' pretty eyes lit up when he brought him chocolates and sweets and sugar quills from Honeydukes, Severus knew he could no longer fight that little part of him that had never given up on a silly teenage flight of fancy. He knew he was deeply in trouble.

Frankly, he thought, perhaps, just perhaps, he didn't really care.

And they lived. (Unless Jo says differently in book six or seven.)
